Sashiko Furoshiki Class with Becky Scellato

SASHIKO FUROSHIKI (Japanese Wrapping Cloth)

Students will learn to make a traditional furoshiki (Japanese wrapping cloth) using sashiko stitching techniques. Different types of sashiko stitches and border designs will be taught as well as how to transfer a design to fabric using transfer paper and stencils. Students can choose designs from a variety of stencils offered for use in class. Additional design templates will be provided in the kit. No sewing machine required. Handwork only. There will be a trunk show of historical sashiko furoshiki samples shown in class.
Kit Fee: $35 – includes fabric for top of furoshiki, sashiko threads, sashiko needle, design templates and transfer paper.
Students should bring: Straight pins, scissors for cutting fabrics and threads, thimble and needle threader (optional), ball point pen, ruler (minimum 12” long – doesn’t have to be wide), and a white wash-out marking pen or pencil.
