Assisi is the birthplace of St. Francis and is a sacred place visited by pilgrims from all over the world. The Assisi embroidery that has been handed down in this area is characterized by many of these designs, in honor of St. Francis, who was able to talk to small birds and animals.  This sampler was designed with such Assisi embroidery in mind.
