Kasuri is a type of ikat woven Japanese fabric in which portions of yarns are left undyed and then woven to create a specific pattern or picture against a darker dyed background.  Our kasuri fabrics are traditional kimono width - 13" to 14" wide.  Most of our kasuri fabrics are from the 40's to 50's.  Only a few artist produce kasuri fabrics today encouraged by government grants and subsidies.

Indigo dyed kasuri fabrics are quite stiff but will soften with repeated washing and use.  The indigo dye will bleed and the fabrics should be hand washed several times in cold water to remove the excess dye.  Allow about 2 - 3% for shrinkage.  Iron kasuri fabric while still slightly damp with a towel over the fabric on the "cotton" setting.  Indigo dyed fabrics have a tendency to develop a shine when ironed on a high heat.

PLEASE NOTE:  Due to the indigo dye, kasuri fabrics may bleed.  It is recommended that you pre-wash kasuri fabrics prior to using the fabrics in your quilt or project.
