While these masks are simple surgical masks, they do not have the same protective capability as N95 masks. Unfortunately, in the United States there are some areas in extreme need and they have been approved to use homemade masks in the interim as they wait for properly manufactured ones. While we know that these simple surgical masks do not provide the same protective capability as N95 masks, sewers are being asked to contact local groups to coordinate making masks and help support local communities.
