What is Tsumugi?  No longer produced, true Tsumugi is an obsolete, costly, narrow Japanese silk fabric made in the following fashion: First, a coarse cloth is woven with cotton wrap and thick silk filling.  Second, this fabric is run through a dye vat several times.  Third, it is buried in the ground until the cotton warp has rotted.  Lastly, the silk is rewoven into a fabric. The result is a mottled design produced by undyed places in the silk yarn where the cotton warp prevented dye penetration.

Olympus Co. of Japan as developed a 100% cotton fabric similar in look and texture to the true Tsumugi.

These fabrics are also a "shot" fabric which means they have different colored warp and weft threads like the tsumugi fabrics. The different colored warp and weft threads help to add to the depth of color in the fabric.

The black colored weft threads are slightly thicker than the warp threads which add some slubbing, also similar to true tsumugi, giving this fabric a wonderful woven texture.
